Following architectural education at Edinburgh University, Martin worked for 7 years at Hamilton Associates Architects, a large commercial practice in central London. Gaining experience in new office developments, industrial buildings and residential schemes, he set up his own practice in 2005. 

Starting as a sole trader, he developed a wide range of client contacts in London, continuing to develop commercial and domestic work streams. 

Born in Harrogate, Martin moved back to York in 2007 to take over an existing practice, Nicholas Associates. By 2009, the practice had become Walker Nicholas. The practice remained focused on the commercial and historic building business sectors.

In 2020 Walker Nicholas joined forces with DSP Architects to form Walker DSP a multi award winning commercial practice.

Martin is married to Kae and lives in York with his three daughters.
